Halloween2_2

Ilustration Friday "Wind". Witches taking to the air on Halloween night.

I think they are actually birds flying on brooms, but hey- a kindergartener drew it. This kid has killed more trees with her drawing habit than I'm comfortable admitting.

Farm

On the anniversary of 9/11 I hope we can pick up the pieces and sow the seeds of change. Submitted for Illustration Friday "Farm".

Illustration Friday "Safe".

Two weeks ago we had a run in with a shark in the ocean. This weekend Steve Irwin died in the ocean.

This is how my four and eight year old would like to enjoy the ocean from now on. Safe and sound, bobbing along out of harm's way. Never mind the fact that safes don't float and the minute it sinks to the ocean floor, no one is around to dial the correct combination for the lock. This kid invention is strictly in the prototype stage.

Last week I mentioned our run-in with a shark on the last day of summer vacation.

This morning my 4 year old was scribbling away at her craft table. Minutes later she passed a sheet of paper to me. Looks like the last day of summer vaca 2006 won't be one she soon forgets.

I think she did an outstanding job of catching us at the nanosecond before I shrieked and ran with her and her brother to safety on the sand.

I know 4 year olds should be allowed some creative license, but I just need to say this- I don't swim in a skirt and her brother doesn't swim in whitey tighties. It's bad enough I take them swimming in a giant pool of potential death, but I don't swim in office attire.

I'd also like to thank her for noticing that I am indeed trying to grow out my bangs. I'd like to think it made me too ugly to eat.

Illustration Friday time again.

Ever since we've announced our upcoming move, Cakes has been less self assured and a bit more prone to the melodramatic. Nightmares and fear of goblins have come into play as well. I hope that once we've moved and are settled into the new house, they will cease.

I always have had the oddest dreams. Full color dreams. As an adult I can still remember snippets of odd dreams I had as a child. Catnip mice coming to life and attacking me, a very fat Chinese man who wouldn't stop jumping up and down on my bed as I tried to sleep. Just last night I dreamt that I rode a sled to my grandparents house and stood in their field while giant strands of irridescent DNA floated in the sky above their pond.

My mother was prone to odd dreams as well, so I assume Cakes will always be cursed with them.

Tonight when she goes to sleep I plan on telling Cakes the story of what her grandma did in her sleep when I was a little girl.

Cakes is sure to get a giggle out of picturing her grandma dreaming there was a giant grey elephant in my parent's bedroom. In her dream she was frantically trying to get out of the room. So much so that she jumped out of bed sound asleep and ripped every single curtain and curtain rod down from the windows in an attempt to escape.

My poor father, who woke up in the middle of her destruction, was terrified. Only when my mom said "It's the elephant! I've got to get away from him!!" did my dad roll over and go back to sleep.

Illustration Friday comes around, well, every Friday, just like Photo Friday. I barely have time to snap a picture or two anymore, much less sit down and create something on paper or via drawing tablet. This might be the only time I participate in I-Fri for the duration of 2006, but what the heck.

Surprise_1

Illustration Friday "Surprise". What Santa would feel if he actually had to buy the gifts.

Both of my kids went to see Santa at the mall yesterday. It's always fun when a four year old girl dressed in black velvet and hot pink, complete with stockings and cute little shoes asks Santa for a "Lego Wookie Turbo Tank" and Santa says "Wha?" and her seven year old brother leans in , interrupting "No! It's called the Clone Turbo Tank and you don't want that, I do. You want a stuffed animal or something".

Then Santa turns to my son with a smile and says "So you want the Lego tank for Christmas this year? and my son replies "Not really, I'd rather have a bow and arrow and a kitty".

"Well, you aren't going to use those presents together are you? Hold on a second- SAY CHEESE!- I am going to get you a bale of hay to put between the arrow and the kitty, okay?" says Santa who removes the kids from his lap as I am handed this photo from the elf, who was in a wheelchair.

A quick rendering of what I envision if I actually agree to buying that television for Christmas.

Free

The vegetarian's interpretation of "Free" for Illustration Friday.

At this time of year people often ask me "Oh, but what will you eat for Thanksgiving? What about Christmas?!"

Well, I'm lucky. I get to skip the main course and head straight to desserts with a slight detour at the veggies and breads.

While you're busy carving another helping of meat, I'm eating your helping of pecan pie. I might eat one for the turkey, too!
